Chapter 14

Carlos

Kaley had all but run away from me on the balcony. I didn’t know whether I’d misinterpreted things, or whether she had panicked and backed out. But either way, it had been disappointing.

Seeing her in that tiny slip had undone me. I’d been seduced by women before, more times than I could count, actually—but Kaley was different. She was so unsure, so unaware of her effect on men, and it was unbelievably sexy. Watching her unbutton and remove my shirt and not throw her down on my bed had shown a kind of restraint that should make me eligible for sainthood.

But later, after the guests were gone and I was alone, I was glad she’d pulled away. Things had been getting intense. We were venturing into territory neither of us were ready to navigate. If I wanted this scheme to continue, the rules needed to be clear.

So, when I arranged our next date two days later, I made sure to tip off the press. With cameras there, things couldn’t get too steamy. We’d be safe.

Then I picked her up at her apartment and realized how wrong I’d been.

“Is this okay?” Kaley asked, looking concerned.

Clearly, my open-mouthed expression had made her think I didn’t like what she was wearing. When really, I liked it so much that my brain had apparently forgotten to signal my dropped bottom jaw to close.

We were heading to the beach, and rather than the yellow polka-dot dress she’d sported at the yacht party, she now had on a red strappy bikini with high-waisted, cut-off denim shorts, and a white halter top that showed off a smooth strip of skin around her belly button.

“You look incredible,” I breathed, stepping back to get a better look.

“Told you!” someone shouted from inside.

Kaley rolled her eyes and pushed the door open further to reveal a tall brunette lounging on the couch, a computer in her lap, and a mess of hair in a ball on top of her head. Her eyes widened into saucers when she saw me.

“This is Heidi,” Kaley said. “Heidi, this is Carlos.”

Heidi flushed deep red then buried her head behind her computer screen.

“She forced me to change out of my board shorts,” Kaley said, yanking at her shorts to try and pull them further down.

I leaned around Kaley. “Thank you, Heidi.”

Without looking at me, she lifted her arm straight in the air and gave me a thumbs-up.

Kaley rolled her eyes again, pushed my chest to force me into the hallway, and shut the door behind her.

Immediately, I wanted to hold her hand to my chest, push her against the wall, and kiss her like I’d wanted to the other night. Instead, I stepped away.

We needed rules. We needed clarity. No more blurred lines.
